Ribbons on ballet shoes: How to sew

You’re tired of your ballet shoes. In fact, you haven’t worn them for years and your mother won’t let you throw them away. Since disposing of the ballet shoes isn’t an option, you might want to consider giving them a makeover? As surprising as it may seem, you can improve the appearance of old shoes. All that you need to do is sew ribbon from the theribbonroom.co.uk onto them. You don’t have to dace on head in order to wear ballet shoes. Ballet shoes are in fashion again and for good reason too. They add a feminine touch and they are comfortable. You should at least try to upgrade the look of your flats. In this article, you will learn how to sew ribbon on ballet flats.

What you will need

  • Ribbon
  • A pair of ballet shoes
  • Thread
  • A needle
  • Sewing pins
  • A pair of scissors

Step 1

The first thing that you need to do is to cut the ribbon into 4 equal pieces. For ballet shoes, the ribbon pieces don’t need to be longer than 70 centimetres. The material comes in one piece, so you have to fold the ribbon in half and cut, then fold each piece and cut again. If you don’t follow these instructions, your pieces of material won’t be equal.

Step 2

It’s necessary to cut off any elastics that is attached to the flats. While some shoes come with elastics attached, some don’t. Either way, you have to make sure that there aren’t any elastics attached to the shoes.

Step 3

Now, you have to determine where the ribbon will be attached. Take a pencil, fold the ballet shoe to the inside sole and carefully mark the place where the satin or leather meets the inside cloth on the inner side. This is the position to sew the ribbon.

Step 4

Do you have shiny or matt ribbons? This question is very important because you may end up using the wrong side. The audience should see the shiny side, not the boring one. Before placing the ribbons, identify if you have shiny or matt material at hand. Once you have identified your ribbon type, fold the end of the material under, so that the edge isn’t visible.

Step 5

Thread the needle and sew the ribbon onto the ballet shoe. Special attention should be paid to the sewing process. You cannot sew through the outside of the flat. If you do so, your footwear will look terrible. What you need to do is stich a square. It is needless to say that you need to repeat the process for all pieces of ribbon, making a rectangle.

If you don’t want the ribbon ends to fray, you can use a lighter or a match, that is if you don’t have a commercial product. Hairspray works just as well.

When you’re done, you can wear your ballet shoes with pride. Your flats will survive many fashion trends and they will keep your comfortable for a long time. You can be sure of that.
